Setting up a company anywhere in the world always gets easier when you choose the right partner to manage your company compliance. Find out WaveScan’s story.
Creating the next generation of sensors & AI-based inspection solution
Located at Block 79, WaveScan Technologies is an A*STAR (Agency for Science, Technology, and Research) spin-off company.
CEO Dr. Kush Agarwal described, “At WaveScan, we are developing the next generation of beamforming non-destructive testing (NDT) sensor systems using engineered meta-structures and advanced AI algorithms. Our goal is to disrupt the current inspection and maintenance practices of the built environment sector by our AI-enabled automated inspection solution.”
WaveScan sensors use electromagnetic waves that can penetrate through medium and detect concealed defect patterns. The underlying sensor technology has been developed at the Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R), A*STAR over the last decade for sub-millimeter defect patterns such as crack and corrosion in aircraft and oil & gas pipelines. The resolution of these abnormalities in these industries is much smaller and can be disastrous if left unnoticed.
“Using our sensors in infrastructure domain, we can identify surface defects such as cracks, corrosion and precursor pittings as well as embedded defects such as tile disbonds, delaminations and loose or broken metal brackets for outer infrastructure inspection. Similar sensors can be used for indoor facility maintenance issues such as scanning hidden pipelines and wiring, pest and rodent infestation detection behind walls and floorings, and water leakage detection”, Dr. Kush added.
Singapore’s Building and Construction Authority (BCA)’s concerns of facade components falling off residential blocks have led them to announce regulations for mandatory facade inspections of buildings, which might kick in this year. Government’s growing concerns towards Infrastructure safety & resilience has led to stakeholders to come up with the Built Environment programmes to support startups build the required technologies.
Why are WaveScan’s sensors efficient? The current practice of manual inspection is tedious & unsafe because the field inspectors & PEs use gondola for high rise buildings. Also, since the process is manual, there is no standardization of the NDT processes for infrastructure facilities. With WaveScan’s sensor technology, we can automate the inspection process and can perform quick scans, increasing productivity, with a higher safety rate and minimal time used to do it.
“The motivation behind using AI-assisted operations is to enhance the overall productivity in Smart Building maintenance solutions towards better livable cities. We can now accurately make predictions basing on the field data which trains the algorithms, and can customize the solution accordingly”, Dr. Kush said.
WaveScan’s smart building NDT inspection & predictive maintenance solution has been supported by Singapore Green Building Council. The team was recently awarded Enterprise Singapore’s Startup SG Tech Proof-of-Value (POV) grant for productizing their technology. A*STAR has also seconded two senior scientists through their Technology Up (T-Up) scheme to WaveScan.
Finding a trusted partner
When asked about choosing Sleek as a service provider, Dr. Kush said, “I have a lot of friends from Entrepreneur First who are with Sleek. After hearing their experience, I decided to get company secretary services.”
Dr. Kush further explained how with Sleek’s digital platform, he can monitor the progress of everything which makes it 100 times easier for him and he adds, “In this millennial age, we prefer everything to be digital!”
At Sleek, we believe in helping our clients whenever they are in need. Dr. Kush adds, “For urgent cases, Oriane and Diana even worked late hours to solve the problem and find solutions. The quality of service has always been top-notch.”
Dr. Kush shared that from what he has experienced with his previous companies, there is a lot of paperwork and it takes a lot of time and energy. He adds, “I would recommend Sleek’s services to startups as founders should be focusing all their time on their business and not having to worry about their accounts or keeping their company compliant.”
“With Sleek’s digital platform, you can get things done quickly such as the signing of documents can be done online in just a jiffy,” said Dr. Kush.
What’s next for WaveScan?
WaveScan is currently in discussions for their seed round funding. One of their main goals for 2019 is building the core team of scientists and engineers. They have already secured large scale paid pilot projects in Singapore, and are currently in discussions with stakeholders in Japan and France.
“We will start our projects with Singapore-based infrastructure companies by Q3! Our team is working dedicatedly to meet our projected milestones”, added Dr. Kush. I am flying to China to close a deal this month & we are giving a live-demo of our inspection technology at VIVATECH 2019 in Paris next month (WaveScan has been invited by VINCI).
