Speak français was incorporated in Singapore through Sleek in December 2017. Founder Annabelle De Place Demoustier shares her journey with us.
Language learning in Singapore
Speak français was originally dedicated to French training for corporates, individual learners and expatriate families.
Annabelle says, “Some French companies like to provide their employees with French lessons. It is a way for employees to understand the culture that they are working in.”
The business has grown, and they are now able to provide you great ways to learn English and Mandarin too.
Annabelle says, “We teach to Europeans, Singaporeans, Malaysians, Filipinos and many more. The exciting part of it is that they bring their own culture to class and we bring our own. That is what makes it so great.”
There are different levels of classes available, with beginner’s classes that help students understand the culture as well as teaching them basic communication skills and also advanced classes for employees who will be transferred to Paris or another country. “Some companies have French language as a requirement, so this is when we train people for exams as well.”
Learning in real life situations with French yoga
Another activity that Speak Français provides is yoga classes in French for small groups as well as corporate team building. Annabelle has professionally trained in India, focusing on Vinyasa yoga style. She adds, “In this yoga style, it is important to move your body in coordination with your breath.”
This helps you become aware of your body, to calm down and have a relaxed mind. Yoga has a role to play in the corporate world. It increases employee efficiency, improves concentration and focus and it is also a nice way to relieve tension from their bodies.”
Easy and practical advice with Sleek
When asked how she heard about Sleek, Annabelle said, “I heard about Sleek from a few people. They recommended that I work with them. I am a firm believer in word of mouth because people are putting their reputation on the line with the service. They wouldn’t recommend it if they knew it was a bad service.”
Annabelle had a call with Sleek’s cofounder and CEO, Julien Labruyere. He put her at ease about the whole incorporation process and explained the steps involved clearly and straight to the point. She chuckled and said, “I felt like I could trust them!”
Being the owner of a small business means a busy schedule. Luckily, she does not have to worry about her accounts, which frees her up to work on what she’s passionate about – teaching. She explains, “I mainly communicate with Mary and John from the accounting team and they both are very responsive. If I have any questions about my bookkeeping or accounting, they get back to me in less than 24 hours – I’m never left waiting.”
Sleek’s senior accountant John Yap is happy to help small business owners such as Annabelle. “When Speak français first came onboard, no proper accounting had been done, which is fairly typical with small operations like this. We had to catch up on expenses and sales incurred documents as they were not properly recorded. Annabelle was looking for someone to help out with all of this, and we were more than happy to do it and explain what we were doing along the way.”
“We also helped Annabelle with another issue that is common for class-based businesses – that some clients pay by cash” said John.
“She asked for advice about whether or not she should bank in the cash payments or hold it on hand. We advised her that it is best to keep the money on hand and use that cash for business expenses, instead of going through a longer process of claiming it back.”
Now that Speak Français’s books are in order, it’s smooth sailing, with the benefit of being able to see what’s going on in the company at all times. “She can now view all of her financial reports just by logging in, and have a better view of the financial performance of her company.”
When asked about recommending Sleek’s services to others, Annabelle is happy to spread the word. “I have already told so many people about Sleek and their services! I am very happy with them.”
Stretching her business to new heights
Now that she has ironed out all the kinks in her accounting, Annabelle aims to expand more into the corporate world with her yoga classes. “I used to work in a company before, and I know how stressful it can get both on the body and mind. I would like to go back to that field and make a change with my expertise in yoga.”
