Get started with public liability insurance

When disaster strikes, is your business prepared to handle the impact? Workplace accidents happen, and your business should have the proper insurance coverage in place.

What is public liability insurance

Public liability insurance (sometimes called General Liability insurance) protects your businesses against claims for third-party injuries or property damages to a third party, during the course of business operations.

What does public liability insurance cover

The public liability insurance covers compensation that the business is liable to pay, arising from damage to third party property and/or bodily injury. For example, it includes:

  • Destruction of part of your neighbors’ property following a fire or a flow from your premise
  • Accidental injury to a 3rd party caused by one of your staff when visiting a client
  • Food poisoning from food or drinks consumed sold by the insured on the insured premises
  • Legal defence costs incurred

Types of business that should get public liability insurance

Any businesses that have a premise and/or staff are encouraged to get this insurance. Often this is a requirement made by clients, landlords etc, where they ask to see your public liability insurance certificate.

What does public liability insurance matter

This is often considered as the first insurance any business should have to cover your Civil Liability within your premise or caused by one of your employees. In Hong Kong, such insurance is often requested by many stakeholders before entering into any business agreement. The basis of Public Liability in Hong Kong is a limit of HKD 10,000,000.
